AfroCubism has been named to the No. 1 spot on AOL Spinner's list of the Best World Music Albums of 2010, with the site exclaiming: "Clearly, the world music album of the year." Though the album's release comes a decade and a half after its inception, "not only was it worth the wait, but it probably exceeded the potential of the past with an infusion of some vibrant new talent from West Africa." Spinner also names The Black Keys' Brothers among the 30 Best Albums of 2010.
AfroCubism has been named to the No. 1 spot on AOL Spinner's list of the Best World Music Albums of 2010, with the site's Steve Hochman exclaiming: "Clearly, the world music album of the year." The news comes just one day after the album topped the year's best world music list from WNYC's Soundcheck.
Hochman recounts the project's history, dating back to the 1996 recording sessions in Havana that produced the Buena Vista Social Club when visa troubles kept the Malian musicians from arriving then. The AfroCubism sessions finally did take place a decade and a half later, "and not only was it worth the wait," says Hochman, "but it probably exceeded the potential of the past with an infusion of some vibrant new talent from West Africa."

The Black Keys' Brothers, no stranger to year-end, best-of lists itself, has made Spinner's list of the 30 Best Albums of 2010, coming in at No. 11. The Spinner staff says the album makes for "some seriously sinewy, stripped-down blues-rock. Guitarist/vocalist Dan Auerbach and drummer Patrick Carney sidle deftly from laid-back funk-laced tunes to pulverizingly heavy garage rock assaults that would get a nod of approval from Hendrix himself."
