Joshua Redman and his trio, featuring drummer Greg Hutchinson and bassist Matt Penman, gave a performance at Clowes Memorial Hall in Indianapolis earlier this month to kick off the Indianapolis Jazz Festival, which came to a close last night. All About Jazz called the set from this "evocative trio" "a brilliant start" to the festival.
"By the inner compass one finds one's direction, and Joshua Redman didn't fail to find his," writes Elena Gillespie in the All About Jazz review. The set featured songs from Redman's latest Nonesuch release, Compass, which Gillespie calls "another exquisite journey" from Redman.
Gillespie goes on to recognize the rich musical legacy left to Joshua Redman by his late father and, just as important, the younger saxophonist's success in standing out with talents of his own. "Progeny of great musicians are not always prodigies," she writes, "but as the son of saxophonist, Dewey Redman, Joshua Redman is a blazing exception to this caveat. A nuanced player, he not only demonstrated his grasp of the details on this lovely Indian summer night, but also his developing maturity in the 75-minute set."

The Indianapolis Star described the Trio's set as "golden jazz." Reviewer Jay Harvey says the set ran from Redman's "warm, impassioned soprano sax" on the title track from Compass to "Insomnomaniac," another album track and the set's finale, "a spectacular one, with wildness and wit from all three players."
