It's been a banner day for Wilco and year's best lists. Earlier today, we reported that The Independent had named the band's latest Nonesuch release, Wilco (the album), Album of the Year. Now, the Associated Press has announced that its Top Ten list of the best albums of 2009 includes the album at No. 3. And coming in at No. 9 is Allen Toussaint's The Bright Mississippi.

Upon the release of Wilco (the album) this past summer, much was written about the contentment that front man Jeff Tweedy seemed to have found, as evidenced by the words and music found on the band's seventh studio release. Writer Jake Coyle, author of the AP list, says the transition has served both Tweedy and the band's music well. "He's better with those days behind him," writes Coyle, such that "good spirit and Tweedy's top notch songwriting feel utterly unencumbered" on the new album.

Allen Toussaint has always been "one of the more elegant of the Crescent City's great R&B men," says Coyle of the New Orleans native. Now, on his Joe Henry-produced Nonesuch debut, The Bright Mississippi, "Toussaint tiptoes cleanly and with panache through jazz, with standards by Thelonious Monk, Duke Ellington, Louis Armstrong and Django Reinhardt."

Included on the AP list as an Honorable Mention is Dan Auerbach's solo debut, Keep It Hid, and Amadou & Mariam's Welcome to Mali, says Coyle, "was also one of the year's best."
