Benjamín Escoriza, the Spanish singer and former vocalist of Radio Tarifa, died on March 9, 2012, after a long illness. Benjamín Escoriza was born in Colomera, Granada, in 1953 and moved to Madrid in 1989, where he met Vicente Molino and Fain Sanchez Dueñas. They would form the band Radio Tarifa, which release four albums on World Circuit/Nonesuch Records: Rumba Argelina, Temporal, Cruzando el Rio, and Fiebre.

Benjamín Escoriza was born in Colomera, Granada, in 1953 and moved to Madrid in 1989. While working in television administration in the Spanish capital, he met Vicente Molino and Fain Sanchez Dueñas. They would form the world music band Radio Tarifa, which released four albums on World Circuit/Nonesuch Records.
Founded in the early 1990s, Radio Tarifa combined Flamenco, Arab-Andalusian music, Arabian music, Moorish music, and influences of the Mediterranean, the Middle Ages, and the Caribbean. In 1993, Radio Tarifa released Rumba Argelina. Produced by the independent label Música Sin Fin, the album is regarded as a one of the finest works in Spanish world music. Other well received recordings followed: Temporal, Cruzando el Rio, and Fiebre. All four albums were licensed by World Circuit Records and released in North America on Nonesuch Records.
Along with his work for Radio Tarifa, Benjamín Escoriza released two solo albums: Alevanta! and Mirando p’l Este.
Benjamín Escoriza is survived by his wife and two children.
