Björk is the recipient of the 2010 Polar Music Prize. "With her deeply personal music and lyrics, her precise arrangements and her unique voice," the award citation reads, "Björk has already made an indelible mark on pop music and modern culture at large, despite her relative youth." Also honored is Ennio Morricone. The prize will be awarded by King Carl XVI Gustaf of Sweden at a televised gala ceremony in Stockholm on August 30.
Björk is the recipient of the 2010 Polar Music Prize, announced the Polar Music Prize Foundation. "With her deeply personal music and lyrics, her precise arrangements and her unique voice," the award citation reads, "Björk has already made an indelible mark on pop music and modern culture at large, despite her relative youth ... Björk has introduced an arctic temperament to popular music and shown how passionate and explosive it can be. Björk is an untameable force of nature, an artist who marches to nobody’s tune but her own."
Also honored this year is Italian composer Ennio Morricone. This year's two laureates will receive their prize from His Majesty King Carl XVI Gustaf of Sweden at a gala ceremony at the Stockholm Concert Hall to be followed by a celebratory banquet at Grand Hôtel on Monday, August 30. The ceremony will be broadcast live on Swedish national television (TV4). Each laureate receives a total amount of one million SEK (approximately $131,000).
Previous laureates include Steve Reich, Joni Mitchell, Gilberto Gil, Bob Dylan, and Paul McCartney.
