Bombino brought his month-long European concert tour featuring music from his recently released Nonesuch debut, Nomad, to London's Village Underground last night for a "young, enthusiastic crowd, cheering a Tuareg singer-songwriter and guitarist from the northern desert of Niger as if he were a rock star," reports the Guardian's Robin Denselow in a four-star concert review.

Bombino's "performance from the start was energetic and full-tilt, driven by the conventional rock lineup of guitar, bass and drums," says Denselow. "Most of his songs are built around sturdy, deceptively simple but memorable riffs, and the best, such as Imuhar, or the driving and hypnotic Amidinine, sound better with every hearing." Noting "Bombino's energy and charisma," Denselow concludes: "He was clearly enjoying himself, and his enthusiasm was contagious."

The Independent, previewing the concert, describes Bombino as "a brilliant young Tuareg guitarist and singer-songwriter" and Nomad as "a bone-shaker of a new album." 

The Huffington Post, in an article enticingly entitled “Bombino Revives Romance, Kicks Like Espresso, Lifts Your Mood, Makes Your Party. It’s Great Music,” describes Bombino’s guitar playing as “round like Knopfler, spacy like Hendrix, concise like Ali Farka Toure.”

Bombino and the band take the tour to the Continent this weekend for performances in Norway and Spain, before heading to Belgium and Portugal. They head to the States at the end of May for a tour that includes headline dates, festival sets, and opening spots with Amadou & Mariam, Gogol Bordello and Robert Plant.
