Brad Mehldau begins a five-night residency at New York's famed Birdland jazz club tonight with a very special quartet, joining saxophonist Lee Konitz, drummer Paul Motian, and bassist Charlie Haden to celebrate the venue's 60th anniversary.

The collaboration came together when Konitz, after playing his first-ever Birdland performance with Motian last July, joined Haden and Mehldau on the road in Europe, and recognized that all four should come together.

New York Times jazz critic Nate Chinen recommends the shows, calling the combo an "all-star package" and recognizing the Mehldau "will be the only musician under 70, but he’s an old soul, and on secure footing: a dozen years ago he made a good live album with Mr. Haden and Mr. Konitz."
