Brad Mehldau begins a five-night residency at New York's Birdland tonight with a quartet the New York Times calls an "all-star package"—Lee Konitz, Paul Motian, and Charlie Haden—to celebrate the venue's 60th anniversary. In January, Brad returns to New York to perform two solo sets at the Highline Ballroom to benefit JazzReach, a non-profit organization dedicated to the promotion, performance, creation, and teaching of jazz.

Brad Mehldau begins a five-night residency at New York's famed Birdland jazz club tonight with a very special quartet, joining saxophonist Lee Konitz, drummer Paul Motian, and bassist Charlie Haden to celebrate the venue's 60th anniversary.

The collaboration came together when Konitz, after playing his first-ever Birdland performance with Motian last July, joined Haden and Mehldau on the road in Europe, and recognized that all four should come together.

New York Times jazz critic Nate Chinen recommends the shows, calling the combo an "all-star package" and recognizing the Mehldau "will be the only musician under 70, but he’s an old soul, and on secure footing: a dozen years ago he made a good live album with Mr. Haden and Mr. Konitz."

On January 14, Brad will be back in New York to perform two sets of a different sort. He will give two solo piano performances at the Highline Ballroom with proceeds going to benefit JazzReach, a non-profit organization dedicated to the promotion, performance, creation, and teaching of jazz music.

Through the presentation of live multimedia educational programs for young audiences, main-stage concerts for general audiences, and clinics and master-classes for student musicians and ensembles, JazzReach has worked to foster a greater appreciation, awareness, and understanding of the art form since 1997.
