Brad Mehldau launches a month-long European tour starting with a five-show run of performances with the Orpheus Chamber Orchestra, followed by an 11-city tour with the Brad Mehldau Trio.

The Orpheus tour kicks off with a performance at the International House of Music in Moscow tonight, followed by stops in Berlin, Munich, Dusseldorf, and Vienna into next week. The program features the premiere of Mehldau's newly commissioned work, Variations for Piano and Orchestra on a Melancholy Theme, as well as Prokofiev's Symphony No. 1 and Mozart's Symphony No. 41. For a preview of the tour watch the video from Orpheus, featuring members of the orchestra, below.

Nonesuch Records released a four-album series of albums, from 1996 to 2000, on which the Orpheus Chamber Orchestra joined Richard Goode to perform Mozart piano concertos; the New York Times called it "fresh, energetic Mozart certain to tickle the fancy of anyone who delights in inspired music-making.” For additional details, visit the Nonesuch Store.

Mehldau then meets up with his Trio, featuring Larry Grenadier on bass and Jeff Ballard on drums, for a set at Barbican Hall for the London Jazz Festival next Wednesday, November 14, followed by shows in Italy, Germany, France, Sweden, Spain, Switzerland, and Turkey, where the tour comes to a close on December 2. The Brad Mehldau Trio has released two albums on Nonesuch Records this year: Ode, in March, and a companion disc, Where Do You Start, in September. Whereas Ode featured 11 songs composed by Mehldau, Where Do You Start comprises the Trio’s interpretations of ten tunes by other composers, like Sufjan Stevens, Elvis Costello, Sonny Rollins, and Nick Drake, along with one Mehldau original. Both albums are available now in the Nonesuch Store.
