Stephen Sondheim's 80th birthday was celebrated in a big way yesterday. As we detailed yesterday in the Nonesuch Journal, the momentous occasion is being acknowledged in many ways on Broadway and beyond, not least in the Nonesuch Store, where the complete catalog of Sondheim CDs is 30% off all week. And now, the composer's far-reaching impact on musical theater has been acknowledged in a much-deserved concrete, or rather, luminous way: the recently rebuilt Henry Miller’s Theatre on West 43rd Street in New York City will be renamed the Stephen Sondheim.

The Roundabout Theatre Company, which is currently presenting Sondheim on Sondheim, a new musical retrospective of Sondheim's career, and which operates the theater, announced the news at its annual gala last night. The event was already meant to be a special birthday celebration for the composer, including an early performance of Sondheim on Sondheim at Studio 54, followed by a dinner and tribute of songs by composers inspired by the master. In the midst of all that, James Lapine, the director of Sondheim on Sondheim, as well as Into the Woods, Sunday in the Park with George, and Passion, Sondheim musicals for which he wrote the book, and John Weidman, who wrote the book to Sondheim's Pacific Overtures and Assassins, announced the re-naming of the Henry Miller’s in Sondheim's honor.
