Caetano Veloso has been named the Guest Director of the 2011 Telluride Film Festival. Veloso has been invited to select a series of films to present at the festival, now in its 38th year, to be held over Labor Day weekend. Among the festival's past guest directors are Stephen Sondheim, Laurie Anderson, and Peter Sellars, who recommended Veloso as guest director. In keeping with Telluride Film Festival tradition, Veloso’s film selections, along with the rest of the Telluride lineup, will be kept secret until the festival's Opening Day, September 2.
Caetano Veloso has been named the Guest Director of the 2011 Telluride Film Festival. The legendary Brazilian singer-songwriter has been invited to select a series of films to present at the festival, now in its 38th year, to be held over Labor Day weekend, September 2–5, 2011, in Telluride, Colorado. Among the festival's past guest directors are Stephen Sondheim, Laurie Anderson, and Peter Sellars, who is now a permanent curator for the festival and recommended Veloso as Guest Director.
With over 100 film and television credits, Veloso is no stranger to the big and small screen. Veloso followed his 1999 Grammy Award-winning Nonesuch Recorsd release, Livro, with a soundtrack for the Carlos Diegues film Orfeu. In spring 2001, Veloso’s Omaggio a Federico e Giulietta—a live recording made in 1997 in Rimini in honor of two masters of Italian cinema, Federico Fellini and Giulietta Masina—was released. In 2002, Veloso received worldwide recognition for his performance of “Cucurrucucú Paloma” in Pedro Almodóvar’s Academy Award-winning film Talk to Her, which can be heard on the 2003 Nonesuch release The Best of Caetano Veloso.
