Caetano Veloso's US tour continues at LA's Greek Theatre Thursday after a set of what the New York Times calls "typically tuneful and smart" music in New York and one in DC. L.A. Weekly sees Veloso's latest album, zii e zie, as a "rewarding reinvention" of conventional sounds. KTVU in San Francisco, where Veloso heads Saturday for SFJAZZ, calls him a "living legend of Brazilian music."
Caetano Veloso's brief tour of the United States, behind his latest Nonesuch release, zii e zie, continues this week after a stellar launch at New York City's Terminal 5 last Thursday and a Saturday night set at George Washington University's Lisner Auditorium in Washington, DC. There's more music to come tomorrow, when Veloso and the band—Pedro Sá, Ricardo Dias Gomes, and Marcelo Callado—play the Greek Theatre in Los Angeles.
At the tour opener last Thursday, says New York Times music critic Jon Pareles, Veloso's "music was typically tuneful and smart. It was also obstinate, flinty, sometimes raunchy and laced with noise." Read the concert review at nytimes.com.
L.A. Weekly, previewing tomorrow night's show at the Greek, looks to "Veloso's towering, game-changing influence on Brazilian music (both lyrically and musically) from the late '60s onward." Writer Gustavo Turner sees Veloso's latest album as another effort to change the game, a "rewarding reinvention" of conventional sounds, in the vein of David Bowie and Lou Reed. "One could say that in the arrangements of zii e zie," says Turner, "Veloso is trying to reshape the world-conquering sounds of mid-20th century Brazil, the bossa nova and the samba, for the new millennium." Following Thursday's show in LA, Veloso and the band head north to San Francisco for a Saturday night set at the Nob Hill Masonic Center as part of the SFJAZZ spring season. San Francisco TV station KTVU's David Pehling takes a look at the long and ever-evolving career of this "living legend of Brazilian music," from Tropicália to today.
"Over his career," says Pehling, "Veloso has proven himself capable of a mind-boggling range of styles, recording brilliant albums of delicate acoustic balladry and traditional bossa nova one year and delving into funky samba and experimental excursions into pop and rock the next."
