Carnegie Hall has announced its 2019–20 concert season, and featured among the performers taking the esteemed hall's stages are a number of artists familiar to readers of the Nonesuch Journal, including Brad Mehldau, Kronos Quartet, Jeremy Denk, Timo Andres, and Ry Cooder, as well as the New York premiere of a new work by John Adams.
Composer/pianist Brad Mehldau opens Carnegie Hall's Zankel Sampler I series performing a new song cycle with tenor Ian Bostridge in Zankel Hall on Thursday, October 24, 2019. Mehldau and Bostridge are touring Europe together this February.
Kronos Quartet returns to Zankel Hall as part of the Zankel Sampler II series on Saturday, January 25, 2020, to celebrate the 50th anniversary of George Crumb's Vietnam War–inspired work Black Angels with a performance of the piece, which inspired the group's founding in 1973.
Jeremy Denk joins Orchestra of St. Luke's and others in Stern Auditorium on Thursday, March 5, 2020, for an all-Beethoven program, including the Mass in C Major, the second overture Beethoven wrote for Leonore, and more. The concert is part of the Orchestra of St. Luke's series and Carnegie Hall's season-long celebration of Beethoven's 250th birthday.
Timo Andres closes out the Fast Forward series with a solo recital in Zankel Hall on Wednesday, April 29, 2020. The program includes his own works along with those by John Adams, Louis Andriessen, Donnacha Dennehy, Philip Glass, Brad Mehldau, Nico Muhly, Robin Holcomb, Frederic Rzewski, and Copland, and the world premiere of a new piece by Gabriella Smith.
Ry Cooder joins Rosanne Cash to open The Originals series with a celebration of the music of Johnny Cash in Stern Auditorium on Saturday, November 2, 2019.
Additionally, Carnegie Hall's 2019–20 season brings the New York premiere of a new work by John Adams performed by San Francisco Symphony led by Michael Tilson Thomas in Stern Auditorium on Wednesday, March 18, 2020, as part of the Great American Orchestras series, and Sō Percussion performs Steve Reich's 1973 piece Music for Pieces of Wood in Zankel Hall on Saturday, December 7, 2019, as part of the Zankel Sampler II series.
