Chris Thile was featured on NPR's Weekend Edition Sunday yesterday. The mandolin virtuoso spoke with host Rachel Martin about his new album, Bach: Sonatas and Partitas, Vol. 1, on which he performs three Bach works written for solo violin. "There's the mandolin and then there's the mandolin when Chris Thile puts it to work," says Martin. "Chris Thile is stretching the limits of his instrument yet again, this time taking on Bach." Thile kicks off a US tour with his fellow Goat Rodeo Sessions musicians this week.
Chris Thile, whose new album, Bach: Sonatas and Partitas, Vol. 1, was released last week on Nonesuch Records, was featured on NPR's Weekend Edition Sunday yesterday morning. Thile spoke with the show's host, Rachel Martin, about the album, on which the mandolin virtuoso performs three Bach works written for solo violin: Sonata No. 1 in G minor, BWV 1001; Partita No. 1 in B minor, BWV 1002; and Sonata No. 2 in A minor, BWV 1003.
"There's the mandolin and then there's the mandolin when Chris Thile puts it to work," says Martin. Having consistently worked outside the traditional limits of musical genres, not least with the band Punch Brothers, "Chris Thile is stretching the limits of his instrument yet again, this time taking on Bach."

Chris Thile kicks off a ten-day tour of the United States this Thursday with Yo-Yo Ma, Stuart Duncan, and Edgar Meyer, with whom he released last year’s The Goat Rodeo Sessions, which won two Grammys in 2013. The tour begins at Tanglewood in Lenox, Massachusetts, and includes stops in upstate New York, the Midwest, and California, culminating in a show at the Hollywood Bowl.
