Mandolinist Chris Thile and guitarist Michael Daves brought the music of their Grammy-nominated debut duo album, Sleep with One Eye Open, to the picturesque Allen Room overlooking Central Park in New York City last Thursday as part of Lincoln Center's American Songbook series. "They’ve been playing small club shows downtown, and they brought that informality to the Allen Room," writes New York Times music critic Jon Pareles in his concert review, "punctuating dazzling virtuosity with bluegrass-aficionado banter and 'Fiddle Tune Request Time.'”

Sleep with One Eye Open is a collection of 16 traditional tunes by bluegrass legends like The Monroe Brothers, The Louvin Brothers, Jimmy Martin, and Flatt & Scruggs, and the duo's live set followed suit. Thile and Daves "sing and play the daylights" out of those bluegrass tunes, says Pareles, playing both with "breakneck" speed and "with restraint and delicacy."

While Chris Thile is currently in the UK performing with his fellow Punch Brothers and is set to tour the US with the band in support of their forthcoming album, Who's Feeling Young Now?, he and Michael Daves are already scheduled to perform together again at the RockyGrass festival in Lyons, Colorado, this summer.
