To coincide with the start of Devendra Banhart’s European tour next week, a remix of his “Love Song” by Helado Negro was released on Nonesuch Records today. Watch a video for the song here. The original version of “Love Song” appears on Banhart’s latest studio album, Ma. Helado Negro, aka Roberto Carlos Lange, says, “Music always makes me feel like you travel and hear, feel, and see where the sounds are from and take you. Devendra’s ‘Love Song’ does this. It haunts you with love.” He continues, “All of this album does this; it always makes you feel comforted and you’re never a stranger in the places he takes you. The remix I made is me as a witness to these sounds floating through this haunted feeling of love.”

The original version of “Love Song” appears on Banhart’s latest studio album, Ma, which was released to critical acclaim in September 2019. “Love Song (Helado Negro Remix)” is available for download from the Nonesuch Store and iTunes and may be streamed at Spotify, Apple Music, and Amazon.

“Helado Negro has made a rainbow out of frostbite, an orchid out of an Orc, a palace out of a pancake,” Banhart added. “In his reworked vision of ‘Love Song,’ it’s like he set the whole song free, gave it space to roam, way beyond where it once was, so nice and relaxing … Thank you dear hermano!”
Banhart’s upcoming European tour comprises twenty-one dates, beginning in Poland on January 21, and also includes concerts in Germany, Czech Republic, Belgium, Netherlands, UK, France, Switzerland, Italy, Spain, and Portugal. For details and tickets, see below, or visit nonesuch.com/on-tour. Additionally, Banhart will perform at this year’s Big Ears Festival in Knoxville, Tennessee on March 28.
Ma, full of tender, autobiographical vignettes, displays a shift from the sonic experimentation of his previous albums to an intricate, captivating story-telling and emotional intimacy. Banhart favors organic sounds to accompany his voice and guitar, the arrangements bolstered by strings, woodwinds, brass, and keyboards. He sings in English, Spanish, and Portuguese.
Uncut says, “Ma’s thesis is quietly revolutionary, celebrating the nurturing quality of female instinct. Banhart’s most focussed work to date,” while Q wrote, “Banhart’s singular world remains as intoxicating as ever, as if all human life is here.” Pitchfork concurs, “His best and most cohesive statement in more than a decade.” The album features the singles “Kantori Ongaku“ (“Country Music”), “Abre Los Manos“ (“Open Your Hands”), and “Memorial.”
