Laurie Anderson unveiled her latest multimedia piece, Delusion, at the Vancouver Playhouse Theatre this week as part of the 2010 Cultural Olympiad. "Delusion ranks with Anderson’s best," says the Georgia Straight. It is, above all, "smart, funny, emotionally engaging, and flat-out beautiful—in short, everything you’d expect from an artist of Anderson’s stature and reputation."
Laurie Anderson unveiled her latest multimedia piece, Delusion, at the Vancouver Playhouse Theatre this past Wednesday and continues performances there through Sunday. The performances are part of the 2010 Cultural Olympiad.
The Georgia Straight, Canada's largest urban weekly, describes the new piece as "a shining, heartfelt meditation on the ephemeral pleasures and lasting pains of this existence."
The paper's reviewer, Alexander Varty, sees the show as "Anderson’s most personal work in quite some time," with a sense of being "both immediate and revelatory ... On a purely sensual level," says Varty, "Delusion ranks with Anderson’s best."
The reviewer goes on to describe the new piece's masterly use of visual components, featuring artfully placed cameras and projection screens. And then there is, of course, the music. "Delusion is Anderson’s most musically accomplished undertaking since the pop success of 1984’s Mister Heartbreak," says Varty.
The reviewer concludes that, whatever "quibbles" he might have with the Delusion, it is, above all, "smart, funny, emotionally engaging, and flat-out beautiful—in short, everything you’d expect from an artist of Anderson’s stature and reputation."
