Gidon Kremer and the Kremerata Baltica launch their North American tour at Benaroya Hall in Seattle this Friday. Kremer, whom the Boston Globe recently called "one of the most important violinists before the public today," and his chamber orchestra will perform songs from their latest Nonesuch release, De Profundis, at concert halls across the US and Canada for two weeks. Following Friday's show in Seattle, the group will make stops in Berkeley and Costa Mesa, California, Denver, Montreal, Toronto, Chicago, Chapel Hill, Winston-Salem, New York City, and Boston. De Profundis was featured on NPR's All Things Considered yesterday, as part of NPR classical producer Tom Huizenga's presentation of a few select albums for the fall. The album, says Huizenga, "plays through like a fascinating mix tape, with a surprise around every corner."

For the show, Huizenga plays the album piece "Sogno di Stabat Mater," by Russian-born composer Lera Auerbach, a "wonderful" piece, with "somewhat of a dreamlike feel to it."

All Things Considered host Guy Raz finds the piece to be "really interesting stuff." While he defers to Huizenga for classical music expertise, Raz says of Kremer's music: "Every time I listen to him, I'm amazed because there's always something about it that's interesting."

Huizenga concurs, replying that De Profundis "is just, in theory and in practice, it's fantastic ... a very heady but very listenable and terrific mix of music and politics."
