Harps and Angels, the new musical featuring the music and lyrics of Randy Newman, begins previews today at the Mark Taper Forum in Los Angeles. The show opens officially on November 21 and runs through December 22. Though it shares its name with Newman's latest Nonesuch release, the new production includes songs from that album and throughout his career. The show is directed by Jerry Zaks, with Katey Sagal and Michael McKean leading an ensemble cast.

Though it shares its name with Newman's latest Nonesuch release, 2008's Harps and Angels, the new production includes both songs from that album and favorites from throughout his career, including "Political Science," "I Think It's Going to Rain Today," "You Can Leave Your Hat On," "Feels Like Home," and, particularly fitting given the venue, "I Love L.A." (Many of these songs can also be heard on Newman's Nonesuch debut, Songbook Vol. 1, in which the famed singer-songwriter revisits his earlier work via a piano-and-voice solo set.)
The show Harps and Angels, conceived by Jack Viertel, is directed by four-time Tony Award winner Jerry Zaks, with Katey Sagal and Michael McKean leading an ensemble cast that also includes Ryder Bach, Storm Large, Adriane Lenox, and Matthew Saldivar.
