John Adams's String Quartet will receive its world premiere tonight in a performance by the St. Lawrence String Quartet at The Juilliard School's Peter Jay Sharp Theater. The concert is part of Juilliard's annual FOCUS! festival. The new piece is Adams’s second full-length work for string quartet, after 1994's John’s Book of Alleged Dances. The composer will participate in a pre-concert talk beginning at 6 PM. He leads the Juilliard Opera Center in a semi-staged production of The Death of Klinghoffer this Saturday night.
John Adams's String Quartet will receive its world premiere tonight in a performance by the St. Lawrence String Quartet at The Juilliard School's Peter Jay Sharp Theater at 8 PM. The concert is part of Juilliard's annual FOCUS! festival.
The new piece, written for the SLSQ, is Adams’s second full-length work for string quartet and contrasts with its predecessor, John’s Book of Alleged Dances, which Kronos Quartet premiered in 1994, in that it does not include electronics. Also tonight, the composer will participate in a pre-concert talk with Robert Marx, beginning at 6 PM.
Adams has been a featured composer in this year's festival, titled California: A Century of New Music, starting with last week's performance of his Son of Chamber Symphony by the New Juilliard Ensemble under festival director Joel Sachs, and continuing through the festival's culminating event: the Juilliard Opera Center's semi-staged production of Adams's groundbreaking opera, The Death of Klinghoffer, led by the composer, this Saturday night.
