Joshua Redman is the focus of a four-night, multi-concert Domaine Privé at the venues of Cité de la Musique in Paris starting Friday that will showcase some of the different combinations of musicians the saxophone player has explored: Axis Saxophone Quartet on Friday, a duo set with Brad Mehldau on Saturday, a double trio as heard on Redman's album Compass on Sunday, and the trio of Elastic Band Revisited, featuring Sam Yahel and Brian Blade, on Monday.
Joshua Redman is the focus of a four-night, multi-concert Domaine Privé at the venues of Cité de la Musique in Paris, starting tomorrow, Friday, June 15, and running through Monday, June 18, that will showcase some of the different combinations of musicians he has explored, from duo to trio to double trio and quartet.
Redman's Domaine Privé begins with a concert from that rare combination in jazz of a saxophone quartet, Axis Saxophone Quartet, at the Salle des Concerts on Friday. In addition to Redman, the Axis features Mark Turner, Chris Cheek, and Chris Potter (who is also a member of Pat Metheny's new Unity Band). The Axis Quartet comes together again next month to perform at the North Sea Jazz Festival in Rotterdam, Netherlands, where Redman is the Artist-in-Residence. Friday's opening-night concert will be preceded by a multimedia presentation from journalist Vincent Bessières at the Médiathèque, offering an in-depth look at the program ahead.
On Saturday, Joshua Redman is joined by pianist Brad Mehldau—a longtime friend, frequent collaborator, and Nonesuch Records label mate—for the latest in their popular duo show, at Salle Pleyel. Redman and Mehldau's most recent recorded collaboration can be heard on Mehldau's 2010 Nonesuch release, Highway Rider.
For Sunday night's concert at Salle des Concerts, Joshua Redman revisits the unusual format of the double trio—two basses, two drums, and his sax—which he first explored on his 2009 Nonesuch album, Compass. Redman considered that album "a further exploration of the trio format ... an expansion on, and an extension of, Back East," his acclaimed 2007 trio session. The concert reunites bassist Reuben Rogers and drummers Brian Blade and Gregory Hutchinson from the album and adds bassist Matt Penman to the mix.
Joshua Redman's Domaine Privé concludes on Monday night with Elastic Band Revisited, featuring Sam Yahel on keyboards and Brian Blade on drums. The concert at Salle des Concerts reunites the trio featured two of the saxophonist's albums: the 2002 Warner Bros. album Elastic and Redman's Nonesuch Records debut, Momentum.
