The life and music of Canadian singer-songwriter Kate McGarrigle will be celebrated in a number of special events held in her hometown of Montreal this week. The Outremont neighborhood where McGarrigle lived will inaugurate Place Kate-McGarrigle in her honor Wednesday afternoon. Later that evening, the feature documentary capturing the 2011 NYC McGarrigle tribute concerts will be screened at the Théâtre Outremont, where, on Thursday, Kate's children, Rufus and Martha Wainwright, and her sisters Anna and Jane will host two tribute concerts with special guests to benefit the Kate McGarrigle Foundation for sarcoma research.

The Outremont neighborhood where McGarrigle lived will honor the beloved singer and Canadian Songwriters Hall of Fame member with the inauguration of Place Kate-McGarrigle on Laurier Avenue, between Querbes and Durocher Avenues, starting at 1:30 PM this Wednesday, August 7. The square will feature a chair designed by Robert Wilson, called Kate/Nora.
Later that evening, Sing Me the Songs That Say I Love You: A Concert for Kate McGarrigle, the feature documentary directed by Lian Lunson that captures the May 2011 New York City concerts honoring McGarrigle, will be screened at the Théâtre Outremont on Bernard Avenue West. Click here for tickets.
On Thursday, August 8, the Festival International de Jazz de Montréal presents two benefit concerts, also at the Outremont, at 6 PM and 9:30 PM. Following in the tradition of the 2011 New York concerts and similar tributes in Toronto and London held after McGarrigle died of sarcoma in 2010, proceeds from the Montreal events, titled Cheminant vers ma ville: A Concert for Kate McGarrigle, will go to the Kate McGarrigle Foundation for sarcoma research. Kate's children, Rufus and Martha Wainwright, her sisters Anna and Jane McGarrigle, will host the evening, joined by special guests and local stars including Pierre Lapointe, Robert Charlebois, Michel Rivard, Marie Michèle Desrosiers, and Fanny Bloom. Earlier this year, Nonesuch Records released Sing Me the Songs: Celebrating the Works of Kate McGarrigle, which features highlights from the New York, London, and Toronto tribute concerts. Net proceeds from the sale of the album also will be donated to the Kate McGarrigle Foundation. The double-disc set was produced by Joe Boyd, who curated the concerts, and features performances by Rufus and Martha Wainwright, Anna McGarrigle, Emmylou Harris, Antony, Norah Jones, and Teddy Thompson, among others.
