Kronos Quartet begins its four-night residency at San Francisco's Z Space @ Artaud tonight. Each of the four nights' performances will offer a different program, each featuring Jon Rose's Music from 4 Fences; a work by Terry Riley; a piece by composers from the Kronos: Under 30 Project Alexandra du Bois, Felipe Pérez Santiago, Dan Visconti, and Aviya Kopelman; and other commissioned works by Damon Albarn, John Zorn, Bryce Dessner, and Clint Mansell. What's more, there will be Kronos buttons aplenty (pictured at left) available at the venue.

Premiered at the Sydney Opera House in June 2009, Music from 4 Fences features Kronos performing on four specially-built fences to create an eclectic aural environment, accompanied by a visual design by Willie Williams, U2’s long time tour designer and director.

SF Weekly, in recommending tonight's show as "a rare treat indeed," says: "It's no stretch to call the Kronos Quartet iconic; the string foursome's very name has become shorthand for visionary, genre-blind exploration. And rightly so." Read more at sfweekly.com.

In a recent interview with the San Francisco Bay Guardian about the performances, Kronos violinist and artistic director David Harrington explained that they would be dedicated to the memory of the late historian and activist Howard Zinn, with whom the group had performed and become close.

"Howard was an amazing friend, a guest performer, and someone who supported us completely," Harrington told the paper. "We miss him so much."
