Excerpt

The Nonesuch album featuring works by composer Krzysztof Penderecki and those they inspired by composer/guitarist Jonny Greenwood itself stemmed from a concert in Poland last fall that presented the composers' works side by side. Tonight, the AUKSO Chamber Orchestra, which performed in the original concert and on the album, performs the works at the Open'er Festival in Gdynia, Poland. The concert will be streaming live at 8 PM CEST (2 PM EDT) at youtube.com/opener.

The Nonesuch album featuring works by composer Krzysztof Penderecki, whom the Independent calls “Poland’s godfather of the musical avant-garde,” and those they inspired by composer/guitarist Jonny Greenwood—Penderecki's Threnody for the Victims of Hiroshima and Polymorphia (for 48 strings) and Greenwood's Popcorn Superhet Receiver and 48 Responses to Polymorphia—itself stemmed from a concert in Poland last fall that presented the composers' works side by side. Tonight, the works return to Poland as the AUKSO Chamber Orchestra, which performed in the original concert and on the album, performs the works at the Open'er Festival in Gdynia, Poland. Penderecki will lead the ensemble in his pieces and Marek Moś will lead them in Greenwood's pieces, as on the album. For those who can't make it to Poland, the concert will be streaming live tonight at 8 PM CEST (2 PM EDT) at youtube.com/opener.

The Penderecki/Greenwood album was released on Nonesuch Records in March to critical acclaim and was recently listed among the year's best albums so far by NPR listeners. The Observer says: "Penderecki's Threnody (1960) still has the power to shock, while Greenwood's Popcorn Superhet Receiver (2005) is already a modern classic." The Los Angeles Times says "Jonny Greenwood shows a deft classical touch."

To pick up a copy of the album, head to the Nonesuch Store, where CD orders include a download of the album at checkout. It's also available to purchase there as high-quality MP3s and FLAC lossless files.
