Laurie Anderson's film Heart of a Dog, which began its theatrical run at the Film Forum in NYC last month, has extended its run there, and opens at the Nuart in LA, where Anderson will participate in Q&A sessions this weekend. It also opens in additional theaters in New York and New Jersey and will been shown at the Virginia Film Festival in Charlottesville on Friday. The Los Angeles Times calls it "transfixing," saying it's Anderson's spirit, "beautifully inquisitive, witty, open, lyrical and generous—that makes Heart of a Dog so dreamily memorable." The film will open in more theaters across the country in the coming weeks. The soundtrack is available everywhere now on Nonesuch Records.
Laurie Anderson's new film, Heart of a Dog, which began its theatrical run at the Film Forum in New York City last month to critical praise, has extended its run at the Film Forum and expands to additional theaters in the United States this weekend, opening at the Nuart Theatre in Los Angeles; Symphony Space in New York City; Jacob Burns Film Center in Pleasantville, Time & Space Limited in Hudson, Cinema Arts Centre in Huntington, New York; and Clairidge Cinema in Montclair, New Jersey. Anderson will participate in Q&A sessions and introduce the film at select screenings at the Nuart as well. Having been screened at the Telluride, Venice, Toronto, New York, and London Film Festivals earlier this year, Heart of a Dog will also be shown at the Virginia Film Festival in Charlottesville on Friday.
"Like a docent of the soul, Laurie Anderson guides us through the often confounding and illuminating stages of love, death and loss in Heart of a Dog, a transfixing personal essay inspired by her rat terrier Lolabelle, who died four years ago," writes the Los Angeles Times film reviewer Robert Abele in advance of this weekend's opening. "It's the renowned multimedia artist's first feature since the 1986 concert film Home of the Brave, and it's a welcome return."
Abele goes on to describe the film as "that rarest of pieces, an unabashedly experimental work that's as inviting as a visit with an old friend," concluding that it's Anderson's spirit, "beautifully inquisitive, witty, open, lyrical and generous—that makes Heart of a Dog so dreamily memorable."
