Kronos Quartet gives the New York premiere of Awakening: A Musical Meditation on the Anniversary of 9/11, for the Brooklyn Academy of Music (BAM)'s 2011 Next Wave Festival, with four consecutive nights of performances at the BAM Harvey Theatre, starting tonight. Kronos and Nonesuch Records partnered with BAM to give away a pair of tickets to the Opening Night performance this Wednesday. Congratulations to winner Ross Burlingame, who cites the group's recording of Philip Glass's Mishima soundtrack as his favorite Kronos album.

Awakening: A Musical Meditation on the Anniversary of 9/11 includes works from Uzbekistan, Iraq, Iran, India, Germany, Argentina, Sweden, Finland, Russia, Canada, and the United States, drawing from composers including Terry Riley, Osvaldo Golijov, and Gustavo Santaolalla.

Kronos Quartet gave a preview of the show when they performed live on Soundcheck from NPR member station WNYC, 93.9 FM, earlier this week. The segment opens with Kronos performing the Iraqi song Oh Mother, the Handsome Man Tortures Me, which appears on their latest Nonesuch release, Floodplain, followed by the traditional Swedish tune Tusen Tankar. Kronos founder and violinist David Harrington also talks with host John Schaefer about the origin of this week's concerts, as well as the new Steve Reich piece WTC 9/11, which the group commissioned and performs on the latest Reich album, released yesterday on Nonesuch.
