The line-up for the 2013 Luminato Festival in Toronto has been announced, and included among this year’s performers are four artists familiar to readers of the Nonesuch Journal: Bombino, Amadou & Mariam, Laurie Anderson, and Carolina Chocolate Drops. All of these artists will give free concerts in David Pecaut Square at the Hub of the Festival, which runs from June 14 to 23. Bombino and Amadou & Mariam play back-to-back sets on Sunday, June 16, starting at 2 PM. Laurie Anderson perform at the Hub later that night, at 9 PM. The following evening, on Monday, June 17, Carolina Chocolate Drops take the stage at 9 PM, preceded by a set from Corey Harris.

“As the heart of our Festival, I always look forward to the music program at the Hub,” says Jorn Weisbrodt, Luminato’s Artistic Director. “It still amazes me that we can take so many different talents and musical directions from all parts of the globe, put them on one stage, and create such coherence.”

Among the Luminato Festival’s other highlights this June will be a two-night tribute to Joni Mitchell in advance of the singer-songwriter’s 70th birthday in November. Joni: A Portrait in Song, held at Massey Hall on June 18 and 19, will feature performances from Chaka Khan, Glen Hansard, Rufus Wainwright, and others with a band led by drummer Brian Blade (who can be heard on Joshua Redman's forthcoming album, Walking Shadows) and including Bill Frisell, among others. Additionally, a multi-artist appreciation of Joni Mitchell with the New York Times’ Jon Pareles will take place on Sunday, June 16, at the Isabel Bader Theatre as part of TimesTalks Luminato.
