Stephin Merritt and the Magnetic Fields are currently working on a new album, 50 Song Memoir, for future release on Nonesuch Records. The band will perform music from the album live starting at the end of 2016 and throughout 2017. Three shows have been announced thus far: Brooklyn Academy of Music on December 2 and 3, 2016; Royce Hall in LA on April 27 and 28, 2017; and Moore Theatre in Seattle on May 6 and 7.
Stephin Merritt and the Magnetic Fields are currently working on a new album, 50 Song Memoir, which will contain 50 songs, one for each year of Merritt's life. It is projected for release by Nonesuch Records in early 2017. There will be more album release information to follow in the coming months.
The band will perform music from the album live starting at the end of 2016 and throughout 2017. In concert, the music will be played and sung by seven performers in a stage set featuring 50 years of artifacts both musical (vintage computers, reel-to-reel tape decks, newly invented instruments), and decorative (tiki bar, shag carpet, vintage magazines for the perusal of idle musicians). The seven performers each play seven instruments, traditional (cello, charango, clavichord) or invented in the last 50 years (Slinky guitar, Swarmatron, synthesizer).
Three shows have been announced thus far, each with Program A performed on the first night, Program B on the second: MASS MoCA on November 18 and 19; Brooklyn Academy of Music on December 2 and 3, 2016; Royce Hall in Los Angeles on April 27 and 28, 2017; and Moore Theatre in Seattle on May 6 and 7.
