As the United States celebrates Independence Day over an extended holiday weekend, Lake Street Dive continues its summer tour of the country with a concert at Kit Carson State Park in Taos, New Mexico, on Friday. From there, the band heads north to Colorado for two concerts: a headlining show at Belly Up Aspen on Saturday and a sold-out set at Red Rocks Amphitheatre in Morrison on Sunday as special guests of The Avett Brothers.

Lake Street Dive’s 2018 album, Free Yourself Up, “strives to empower and liberate in an age of turmoil,” says WFUV. “It’s a confident collection of songs that reflects the quartet’s nearly decade-and-a-half of music making.”

Laurie Anderson performs at Villa Arconati in Milan, Italy, on Friday, as part of the Terraforma festival. Anderson “retains a powerful love and belief in humanity, even after its stories are dismantled,” says the Quietus. Her “imagery and themes are lightly deployed, unobtrusive but perfectly chosen, as subtly telling as a series of haikus.”

Anderson won her first Grammy Award earlier this year, taking home Best Chamber Music / Small Ensemble Performance with Kronos Quartet for their album Landfall. The Washington Post calls it “riveting, gorgeous.”

Gabriel Kahane and his father, pianist Jeffrey Kahane, join the Grant Park Orchestra and conductor Carlos Kalmar for two outdoor concerts in Millennium Park in Chicago on Friday and Saturday. Jeffrey performs Gershwin's Piano Concerto with the orchestra, and Gabriel performs his oratorio emergency shelter intake form with the orchestra, vocalists, and the Harmony, Hope & Healing Community Chorus. There will also be an open rehearsal of the program Friday morning and pre-concert talks each evening.

Gabriel Kahane's Nonesuch debut album, Book of Travelers, was released last year. "Exquisitely crafted," says Uncut. "Musically fascinating and hauntingly empathetic." "Extraordinary," says the San Francisco Chronicle; "vivid and wholly original." Rolling Stone calls it a "stunning portrait of a singular moment in America." Jeffrey Kahane recorded an album featuring Bach's Partita No. 4 in D Major and Three-Part Inventions (Sinfonias) on Nonesuch in 1992.

Kronos Quartet gives a free concert, titled Far but Close: Contemporary Music Identities in the USA, at Castelo de Sines in Sines, Portugal, on Saturday, as part of the Land Without Shadow festival. The program includes works by John Coltrane, George Gershwin, Geeshie Wiley, Terry Riley, and Laurie Anderson, and music from Steve Reich’s Different Trains, which was originally written for and recorded by Kronos (Pitchfork included the album among the 200 Best Albums of the 1980s).

Lianne La Havas joins Lionel Richie, Corinne Bailey Rae, and more for Stevie Wonder Song Party: A Celebration of Life, Love & Music in London’s Hyde Park on Saturday. La Havas released her sophomore album, Blood, on Nonesuch in 2015. Rolling Stone declared: “The album demands, and rewards, all the attention you can give it.”

Robert Plant and his band the Sensational Space Shifters bring music from his latest album, Carry Fire, and more to the Roskilde Festival in Denmark on Thursday.
