Donnacha Dennehy's The Hunger is performed by Crash Ensemble, led by Alan Pierson, along with soprano Katherine Manley and sean nós singer Iarla Ó Lionáird, at Abbey Theater in Dublin, Ireland, on Sunday, with performances continuing through next weekend. The Hunger explores Ireland's Great Famine with a libretto drawn from first-hand accounts by American humanitarian Asenath Nicholson.

Nonesuch releases the premiere recording of Dennehy's The Hunger—with Pierson leading Alarm Will Sound, Manley, and Ó Lionáird—next Friday; pre-orders include an instant download of the track “Black Potatoes.” The Hunger “bears hearing and rehearing,” said the Washington Post. “It is powerful, and it makes a statement.” Another track has premiered on Second Inversion and can be heard here.

"Working with Donnacha brought me into a new world, which I wasn't familiar with," Ó Lionáird, who also sings on Dennehy's Nonesuch debut album, Grá agus Bás, tells the Sunday Times ahead of the performances. "I've enjoyed working in that world ever since. It changed me." Dennehy spoke with RTÉ Radio 1's Arena about the upcoming performances and album; you can hear what he had to say at rte.ie.

Composer/pianist Timo Andres is joined by violinist Alyssa Park and cellist Annie Jacobs-Perkins for a trio performance of his own work at The JAI at The Conrad in La Jolla, California, on Sunday, as part of La Jolla SummerFest.

---

Daughter of SwordsMountain Man's Alexandra Sauser-Monnig—performs as special guest of Molly Tuttle at 3rd and Lindsley in Nashville on Sunday. Her debut album, Dawnbreaker, recently released on Nonesuch Records, “reveals her effortless skill as a songwriter as she delivers an homage to the betwixt and between of a relationship in its twilight,” says Pitchfork.

Daughter of Swords released a lyric video for “Easy Is Hard,” from her new album, when she announced tour dates with Wilco and Joan Shelley earlier this week; you can watch it here. She was also on New Sounds’ Soundcheck to perform songs from the album, which you can watch here.

Lake Street Dive tours California as special guest of The Avett Brothers this weekend, with sold-out shows at the Greek Theatre at UC Berkeley tonight and Saturday, and Vina Robles Amphitheatre in Paso Robles on Sunday.

Lake Street Dive singer-songwriter Rachael Price and composer, singer, and guitarist Vilray release their self-titled debut album as Rachael & Vilray on October 4. Nonesuch Store pre-orders include an instant download of the album track “Alone at Last” and an exclusive, limited-edition autographed print. Price can be heard this weekend in an encore broadcast of her performance on the public radio show Live From Here with guest host Jon Batiste, who also makes a guest appearence on Rachael & Vilray; you can see what he had to say about participating on the album in a quick behind-the-scenes video here.

Yola brings music from her Dan Auerbach–produced debut album, Walk Through Fire, to Old Pool Farm in Philadelphia tonight and Saturday afternoon, as part of Philadelphia Folk Festival.

Walk Through Fire has been named one of The Best Albums of 2019 (So Far) by NPR Music, which says it’s an “exhilarating” album that “encapsulates country-soul lustiness, plushly orchestrated pop transcendence and a range of expression both subtle and striking.”
