Donnacha Dennehy's The Hunger is performed by Crash Ensemble, led by Alan Pierson, along with soprano Katherine Manley and sean nós singer Iarla Ó Lionáird, at Abbey Theater in Dublin, Ireland, on Sunday, with performances continuing through next weekend. The Hunger explores Ireland's Great Famine with a libretto drawn from first-hand accounts by American humanitarian Asenath Nicholson.

Nonesuch releases the premiere recording of Dennehy's The Hunger—with Pierson leading Alarm Will Sound, Manley, and Ó Lionáird—next Friday; pre-orders include an instant download of the track “Black Potatoes.” The Hunger “bears hearing and rehearing,” said the Washington Post. “It is powerful, and it makes a statement.” Another track has premiered on Second Inversion and can be heard here.

"Working with Donnacha brought me into a new world, which I wasn't familiar with," Ó Lionáird, who also sings on Dennehy's Nonesuch debut album, Grá agus Bás, tells the Sunday Times ahead of the performances.
