Early James plays the Fonda Theatre in Los Angeles tonight, as special guest of The Marcus King Band. His forthcoming debut album, Singing for My Supper, due March 13 on Easy Eye Sound / Nonesuch Records, spans hard-charging blues, wistful folk, and ages-old pop crooning, anchored by the singer's voice that oscillates from gravel-gruff shout to a honey-smooth whisper. James' inspirations run from Fiona Apple and Tom Waits to the Southern gothic poets, as heard in the album's darker themes and in the wry humor with which he writes about them.

It was announced this week that Early James will join The Black Keys as their special guests on tour in Canada this May; tickets are on sale now.

Devendra Banhart brings music from his new album, Ma, to the Netherlands this weekend: he performs at Annabel in Rotterdam tonight and Doornroosje in Nijmegen on Sunday. Banhart recently released a Helado Negro remix of the Ma track “Love Song,” a video for which can be seen here.

---

Lake Street Dive and Yola are in Maya Riviera, Mexico, for Brandi Carlile's Girls Just Wanna Weekend 2 festival. Yola follows a performance last night by hosting a costume contest on Sunday evening. Lake Street Dive plays the penultimate set of the four-day event with a Main Stage show Sunday night, just before the culminating set: Ladies of the '80s.

Brad Mehldau is joined by the NDR Radiophilharmonie, led by Clark Rundell, in performing his Piano Concerto at Großer Sendesaal in Hannover, Germany, tonight. The program also includes solo works by Mehldau, as well as selections from Bach.

On his 2018 solo album, After Bach, Mehldau pairs selections from Bach's Well-Tempered Clavier with his own After Bach pieces. Mehldau earned his first-ever Grammy Award when his 2019 album, Finding Gabriel, won for Best Jazz Instrumental Album last Sunday. The Associated Press calls it “a soundtrack for our times.”

---

Mandy Patinkin continues to tour the United States with pianist Adam Ben-David, performing songs from his new album, Children and Art, at Proctor’s Theatre in Schenectady, New York, tonight.

“I am drawn to songs that tell a story,” Patinkin tells The Saratogian in an interview ahead of tonight’s show. “I don’t want every song to tell the same story. But I do want every song to build on another song. You don’t have to see the connection, but I believe the audience will feel it. My intention is to create a journey that I and the audience can share.” You can read what else he had to say here.

Joshua Redman and the Still Dreaming quartet—drummer Brian Blade, bassist Scott Colley, and cornetist Ron Miles—bring music from their 2018 self-titled album, inspired by Dewey Redman's band Old and New Dreams, to Krannert Center for the Performing Arts in Urbana, Illinois, on Saturday. The Washington Post calls the group “consistently riveting.”
