Brad Mehldau and his trio—Larry Grenadier on bass and Jeff Ballard on drums—are in New York City this weekend, concluding a sold-out six night residency at the Village Vanguard, playing two sets a night; tonight, Saturday, and Sunday. The New York Times, in recommending the shows, calls Mehldau “among the leading pianists of his generation,” adding that “the group’s appearances at the Vanguard have become a tradition of their own.”

The Trio released the album Live in 2008 and two volumes in the Art of the Trio series at the esteemed venue, as well as a 2011 box set of the complete Art of the Trio series with a bonus disc of previously unreleased material from shows there.

Pianist Jeremy Denk joins and directs the Saint Paul Chamber Orchestra at Ordway Concert Hall this weekend to perform Mozart’s Piano Concertos Nos. 20 and 25 tonight, Saturday, and Sunday. Tonight and Saturday’s performances include pre-concert discussions with violinist Dr. Marc Levine and the orchestra’s managing director and president, Jon Limbacher.

The Washington Post has praised Denk for “expressing virtuosity, humor, nostalgia and experimental daring” as well as his “inimitable sensibility … alive to the work’s poetry, wit, impulsiveness and off-beat yet irresistible charm.” The New York Times has called his performances “rhapsodic … wildly imaginative … compelling … [and] elegant.”

Fleet Foxes close out the Australian leg of their Crack-Up tour with a sold-out set at Fremantle Oval Precinct on Saturday for the final day of the Falls Festival. The band heads to New Zealand next week, then Singapore, Malaysia, and Japan. Pitchfork calls Crack-Up the band’s “most complex and compelling album to date."

Joshua Redman and his Quartet—pianist Aaron Goldberg, bassist Reuben Rogers, and drummer Gregory Hutchinson—conclude a five night residency at Ferring Jazz Bistro in St. Louis this weekend, playing two sets a night tonight, Saturday, and Sunday. Redman brings his quartet to New York City next week for a week-long residency at the Blue Note.
