The North Sea Jazz Festival gets under way at Ahoy Rotterdam in the Netherlands tonight, with live music on tap through the weekend from a diverse array of artists, including several familiar to readers of the Nonesuch Journal: Joshua Redman, James Farm, Pat Metheny, Brad Mehldau Trio, Punch Brothers, Lianne La Havas, Fatoumata Diawara, and Oumou Sangare. Redman, in fact, is this year's North Sea Jazz Artist in Residence and as such performs on each festival day with varied musical projects.

Joshua Redman begins his North Sea Jazz residency in a concert with the Dutch Metropole Orkest conducted by Vince Mendoza at the Amazon stage tonight. The program features the work of Stan Getz, both his traditional jazz and his bossa nova, with additional contributions from singers Luciana Souza and Lilian Vieira.

Saturday brings two concerts from Redman in two different guises: as a member of the collaborative quintet James Farm, also featuring pianist Aaron Parks, bassist Matt Penman, and drummer Eric Harland, at 6:45 PM on the Hudson stage, followed by set with the Axis Saxophone Quartet, with Chris Cheek, Chris Potter, and Mark Turner, making its Dutch debut, on the Madeira stage at 10:15 PM.

Chris Potter is playing triple duty on Saturday. His set with Redman and Axis follows two sets with Pat Metheny's Unity Band. That group, which can be heard on the newly released album of the same name, also includes Antonio Sanchez on drums and Ben Williams on bass. Unity Band plays two back-to-back sets on the Amazon stage at 5:30 PM and 7:30 PM.

Joshua Redman closes out his North Sea Jazz residency by joining The Bad Plus for an afternoon set back on the Hudson stage at 3:30 PM.

It's just one of a multitude sets from Nonesuch artists on Sunday. The Brad Mehldau Trio performs on the Hudson stage at 5: 30 PM. Lianne La Havas is on the Mississippi stage at 6 PM. And Punch Brothers play two sets at Congo Square at 7 PM and 8:45 PM. That's not to be confused with the Congo stage, where World Circuit/Nonesuch artists Fatoumata Diawara and Oumou Sangare are performing at 7:30 PM and is performing at 7: 30 PM and 9:30 PM, respectively. Sangare is joined by Béla Fleck for her set.
