Pat Metheny has once again been named Guitarist of the Year in the DownBeat Readers Poll. "The results of this year's Readers Poll are an indication of the incredible variety and depth of talent on the jazz scene today," said DownBeat Editor Bobby Reed. Metheny released two albums on Nonesuch last year: The Unity Sessions ("Brilliant," Times of London) and Cuong Vu Trio Meets Pat Metheny ("A complete success," All About Jazz).

Pat Metheny has once again been named Guitarist of the Year in the DownBeat Readers Poll, the results of which have just been announced.

"The results of this year's Readers Poll are an indication of the incredible variety and depth of talent on the jazz scene today," said DownBeat Editor Bobby Reed.

Pat Metheny released two albums on Nonesuch last year: The Unity Sessions and Cuong Vu Trio Meets Pat Metheny.

The Unity Sessions is taken from a filmed performance with Pat Metheny Unity Group—Chris Potter on sax and bass clarinet, Antonio Sanchez on drums, Ben Williams on bass, and multi-instrumentalist Giulio Carmassi—first released on DVD in 2015. The set comprises 13 songs by Metheny, one he co-wrote with Ornette Coleman, and one well known standard by Ray Noble. The Times of London exclaims: "It's brilliant."

Cuong Vu Trio Meets Pat Metheny joins the guitarist with a trio led by longtime Pat Metheny Group trumpeter Cuong Vu. It comprises five tunes written by Vu plus one by Metheny and one by Andrew D'Angelo."Cuong Vu Trio Meets Pat Metheny is a complete success," exclaims All About Jazz, "a treat for fans of both musicians."

    Congratulations to Kronos Quartet, whose acclaimed 1992 Nonesuch album Pieces of Africa has been named one of twenty-five recordings to be inducted into the National Recording Registry at the Library of Congress for 2024. "It planted a seed for our work," Kronos founder and violinist David Harrington says of the album. "It's flowered so beautifully."
