Ahead of next week's release of Familial, Philip Selway launches a month-long tour of Japan and Europe. Following performances in Tokyo and Osaka, he heads to Ireland and the UK for several shows, including three with Wilco. NME gives Familial an 8, saying "Selway has delivered an album so honest and thoughtful, you'll see not only drummers but yourself in a new light." MOJO concurs, saying it "shows a sensitivity seldom credited to stickmen."
With just days to go before the August 31 Nonesuch release of Philip Selway's solo debut album, Familial, the singer/songwriter and Radiohead drummer has launched a month-long tour of Japan and Europe, with a performance at the Duo Music Exchange in Tokyo tonight. Following tomorrow night's show in Osaka, Selway heads next to Ireland and back home to the UK for a number of shows at festivals and halls, including a sold-out set at Southbank's Royal Festival Hall in London, the first of three shows with Wilco. (Wilco's Pat Sansone and Glenn Kotche both perform on Familial.) Selway's touring band includes Adem Ilhan, Caroline Weeks, Kath Mann, and Alex Thomas. In the UK, where Familial is out next week on Bella Union, NME gives the album an 8, saying "Selway has delivered an album so honest and thoughtful, you'll see not only drummers but yourself in a new light." MOJO, which features an interview with Selway in its October issue, echoes that sentiment, saying "Familial, his often drum-free album of softly sung and intimate songs, shows a sensitivity seldom credited to stickmen."
Familial is currently streaming in its entirety as part of the NPR First Listen series on npr.org and is available for pre-order on CD and vinyl in the Nonesuch Store, with the complete album included as 320 kbps MP3s starting Tuesday.
