Rhiannon Giddens has curated a series with Symphony Space in NYC for this November. She will be joined by a handpicked selection of artists for a complementary pair of programs celebrating both historical and contemporary women of color in music, dance, spoken word, and more. "I really believe in fostering an artistic community whenever possible," she says, "to play for and with each other, create with each other, make something bigger than ourselves." Giddens has also scored an original ballet for Nashville Ballet and will take part in the premiere performances in February.
Rhiannon Giddens, who was a guest curator at the Cambridge Folk Festival in England last week, has curated a new series with Symphony Space in New York City to take place this November, and will perform in two shows as part of it, on November 14 and 17.
Giddens will be joined in her one-week residency by a handpicked selection of artists on the mainstage Peter Jay Sharpe Theatre, for a complementary pair of programs celebrating both historical and contemporary women of color in music, dance, spoken word, and more. The first performance, "Sisters Past," on November 14, will focus on voices from the past, and "Sisters Present," on November 17, will look at the voices of contemporary songwriters. Her residency also includes two Giddens-curated concerts in the intimate Leonard Nimoy Thalia on November 8 (blues singer Amythyst Kiah) and 15 (pianist Francesco Turrisi).

Rhiannon Giddens has scored an original ballet for Nashville Ballet called Attitude: Lucy Negro Redux. The music features Giddens and Francesco Turrisi, who will perform as part of the ballet's premiere at the Nashville Ballet, February 8–10, 2019. The piece is based on a book of Shakespeare-inspired poetry by Nashville poet Caroline Randall Williams. Tickets are on sale now here.
Giddens performs as special guest of Mary Chapin Carpenter at Wolf Trap outside DC and gives a headline show in Chautauqua, New York, this month. She is guest curator at the North Carolina Folk Festival and will unveil a new original composition at Fresh Grass Festival in North Adams, MA, in September.
