Singer-songwriter-guitarist Ry Cooder will receive a Lifetime Achievement Award at this year’s BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards, Mark Radcliffe announced on his Radio 2 Folk Show. In addition, Cooder will take the stage for a rare UK performance. The Awards ceremony will be broadcast live from Royal Albert Hall in London on BBC Radio 2 starting at 7:30 PM on Wednesday, April 5, and can be watched live online at bbc.co.uk/radio2. Highlights from the event will also be broadcast in an hour-long special on BBC Four the following Sunday, April 9.

A career-long champion of folk music, Cooder is renowned for his inspired slide guitar playing. Through his own work and collaborations with others, he has explored and supported a wide range of musical cultures, from Tex-Mex to Irish folk, and West African blues to Indian classical music.

Also among the performers at this year's awards ceremony is Billy Bragg, who will headline a tribute to Woody Guthrie, as 2017 marks the 50th year of his passing and he is inducted into the Radio 2 Folk Awards Hall of Fame.

The BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards are now in their 18th year. Cooder's Nonesuch Records label mate Rhiannon Giddens was named Folk Singer of the Year at the ceremony last year. Tickets for this year's event are available now from bbc.co.uk/radio2.
