Sara Watkins and her brother Sean launch a three-week tour in support of the Blind Boys of Alabama tonight at the Cedar Cultural Center in Minneapolis, Minnesota. From there, the tour will make stops throughout the Midwest and into the South, with shows in Wisconsin, Illinois, Missouri, Arkansas, Texas, Mississippi, and, of course, the Blind Boys' home state of Alabama.

A couple of weeks later, in mid-December, the Watkins join the Blind Boys out West for the group's Christmas show, Go Tell It on the Mountain, in California and Nevada.

Sara Watkins, a founding member of Nickel Creek (with her brother Sean and Chris Thile), released her self-titled debut solo album on Nonesuch Records in 2009. The album was produced by former Led Zeppelin bassist John Paul Jones and featured eight self-penned tunes along with renditions of tracks by Jimmie Rodgers, Jon Brion, Norman Blake, and Tom Waits.

In 1992, Nonesuch released the Blind Boys album Deep River, which the Los Angeles Times likened the album to "a great gospel performance," with its "slow and medium tempo devotionals” and “roof-rattling rave-ups.” They can also be heard performing "Way Down in the Hole," the Tom Waits-penned tune on the soundtrack to the HBO series The Wire, ... and all the pieces matter.
