Performances of the Stephen Sondheim / Hugh Wheeler musical A Little Night Music resume on Broadway at the Walter Kerr Theatre this evening, following a brief hiatus. The cast returns with Broadway legends Bernadette Peters and Elaine Stritch taking on the roles originated in this first-ever revival of the musical by Catherine Zeta-Jones, who won a Tony Award last month for her performance in the show, and Angela Lansbury.
Zeta-Jones and Lansbury are also featured on the cast recording of A Little Night Music released earlier this year on Nonesuch / PS Classics. The San Francisco Chronicle gives "wild applause" to the album, saying this "new New York cast album is a treasure."
Chronicle critic Robert Hurwitt describes A Little Night Music as a "lovingly lilting and sweetly sardonic adaptation of Ingmar Bergman's Smiles of a Summer Night" and "an irresistible waltz through some of Sondheim's most memorably melodic songs."
