Steve Reich has been named the Artist in Residence at the 2014 Big Ears Festival, which will be held in downtown Knoxville, Tennessee, March 28–30, 2014. The composer will be in attendance at the festival, as Ensemble Signal will perform his groundbreaking 1976 piece Music for 18 Musicians, along with his new Radio Rewrite, inspired by two songs from Radiohead. Radiohead guitarist and composer Jonny Greenwood will perform Reich’s Electric Counterpoint, and So Percussion will perform his 1971 classic Drumming during the weekend as well.

Among the other performers slated to perform at The Big Ears Festival in 2014 are John Cale, Television, Marc Ribot, Dean Wareham, and Glenn Kotche, who recording his own variation on Steve Reich’s Clapping Music on a 2006 Nonesuch Records solo album, Mobile.

The Big Ears Festival brings together musicians and artists from across generations and genres for dozens of concerts, along with installations, exhibitions, film screenings, interactive workshops, talks, and surprise collaborations. The concerts and events will take place in different venues in Knoxville’s historic downtown. The heart and soul of the festival will be at two historic Knoxville theaters, the Tennessee and the Bijou. Other venues include the Knoxville Museum of Art and other theaters, clubs, galleries, and warehouses. Weekend passes go on sale this Friday, December 6, at 12 noon EST, at bigearsfestival.com.

Big Ears debuted in February 2009 with a line-up that included Philip Glass, Antony & the Johnsons, Dan Deacon, and more. In 2010, the Festival featured Artist in Residence Terry Riley and guest curator Bryce Dessner of the National, with Vampire Weekend, Joanna Newsom, The xx, Nico Muhly, My Brightest Diamond, Bang on a Can, and the Dirty Projectors, among others. The Big Ears Festival is produced by AC Entertainment, the organization behind the Bonnaroo Music and Arts Festival.
