The worldwide celebrations of Steve Reich's 75th birth year have come to NYC, starting with tonight's NY premiere screening of the documentary Steve Reich: Phase to Face at the NY Public Library for the Performing Arts; Reich and the film's director will be there. Carnegie Hall presents an all-Reich concert on April 30 featuring Kronos Quartet, Bang on a Can, eighth blackbird, So Percusssion, and three NY premieres; enter to win tickets and more. The worldwide celebrations of Steve Reich's 75th birth year come to New York City this week and the next, starting tonight with the New York premiere screening of Steve Reich: Phase to Face, a 2009 documentary about the composer's work from French director Éric Darmon, at the New York Public Library for the Performing Arts' Bruno Walter Auditorium. Both the composer and the director will be in attendance at tonight's event. They will also be on hand for a question-and-answer session at an encore screening of the film, at New York's Poisson Rouge on Sunday, May 1. You can watch an excerpt from Phase to Face below.
The latter screening comes just one day after Carnegie Hall offers its own celebration of Reich's 75th birthday an all-Reich concert, Music of Steve Reich, on Saturday, April 30, with performances by Kronos Quartet, eighth blackbird, So Percussion, and Bang on a Can All-Stars and Friends featuring Glenn Kotche in the New York premieres of Mallet Quartet, WTC 9/11, and 2x5, as well as a performance of Double Sextet, for which Reich earned the Pulitzer Prize in 2009.
