Double Sextet is paired with 2x5 on Reich's latest Nonesuch release, to which the Detroit Free Press gives four out of four stars. The album is the subject of an article by Free Press music critic Mark Stryker that takes a look at music chosen for the Pulitzer and finds that "recent juries have rewarded some terrific pieces worthy of the acclaim," pieces that, as with Double Sextet, "are represented on strong new recordings."

Stryker says that, while Reich may now be considered "an establishment figure, Double Sextet still gives off a hip, alternative vibe." The piece features "head-bobbing rhythms" and "undulating melodies" in places; elsewhere, "a beguiling soulfulness emerges from the yearning, modal harmony and prayerful melody." Stryker describes eighth blackbird, which commissioned the piece and performs it on the album, "vibrant interpreters."
