Steve Reich will take the stage at Walt Disney Concert Hall in Los Angeles tonight for a concert celebrating the composer's work and his 75th birthday. The all-Reich program—performed by Bang on a Can All-Stars, the percussion ensemble red fish blue fish, percussionist David Cossin, and the composer himself—features the West Coast premiere of 2x5 (which Bang on a Can performs on the 2010 Nonesuch recording of the piece), along with a new video-enhanced arrangement of his early work Piano Phase, Reich's seminal Music for 18 Musicians, and Clapping Music, on which the composer will join in.
Tonight's concert, an LAist Classical Pick of the Week, marks the Disney Hall debut of Bang on a Can All-Stars. It is also part of the Los Angeles Philharmonic's popular Green Umbrella new-music series, which, later this season, includes a program of works by Louis Andriessen and a concert conducted by John Adams.
