The 38th Annual Telluride Bluegrass Festival got under way yesterday 8,750 feet up in bucolic Telluride, Colorado. The music-making continues through the weekend with sets to come from Chris Thile and Michael Daves, Emmylou Harris, and Punch Brothers, plus Sara Watkins sits in with the Decemberists as part of her ongoing tour with the group.

The 38th Annual Telluride Bluegrass Festival got under way yesterday 8,750 feet up in bucolic Telluride, Colorado. The music-making continues through the weekend with sets to come from Chris Thile and Michael Daves, Emmylou Harris, and Punch Brothers, plus Sara Watkins sits in with the Decemberists as part of her ongoing tour with the group.

Mandolin virtuoso Chris Thile and guitar maven Michael Daves, who released their debut duo album, Sleep with One Eye Open, last month on Nonesuch, kick things off this morning with an 11:15 AM set of songs from the new album on the festival mainstage.

Bassist Viktor Krauss, who released an album on Nonesuch in 2004 titled Far from Enough, joins Dobro master Jerry Douglas and drummer Omar Hakim for a set at 2:45.

Emmylou Harris takes the stage tonight at 6:15 to perform songs from her new Nonesuch album, Hard Bargain, and other favorites from throughout her career. As noted earlier today in the Nonesuch Journal, tonight's concert marks the start of Harris's North American summer tour.

On Saturday, Sara Watkins performs a Sara & Friends show at 11:45 AM and then, continuing her tour with the Decemberists, a 6:15 PM set with the group. Chris Klimek of DCist, writing of Watkins’ performance with the band on Monday, writes that she “provided a welcome and powerful vocal and visual” with her fiddle offering a “whiskey-soaked sway.”

Bassist Edgar Meyer, with whom Chris Thile released an eponymous duo record on Nonesuch in 2008, performs a mainstage set Sunday at 12:30.

Thile returns to the mainstage Sunday evening at 5:30 to perform with his band mates of Punch Brothers. Once the sun goes down, the band heads indoors to the Sheridan Opera House to perform as part of the festival's NightGrass events.

The filmmakers of How to Grow a Band, a feature documentary by Mark Meatto about Punch Brothers' early days as an ensemble, touring behind its debut Nonesuch album, Punch, will host a sold-out free screening of the film at the festival Saturday morning at 11 AM at The Nugget Theater in Telluride.
