The Low Anthem announces new US headlining dates for September and October 2011 in support of their latest album, Smart Flesh, released on Nonesuch earlier this year. The band will also rejoin Iron & Wine on October 13 to open their show at Terminal 5 in New York City. The fall headline shows are available for pre-sale beginning today at 10 AM ET at lowanthem.com, where a free download of Working Title 7"—two Smart Flesh outtakes of the same song, alternately titled "The Snake and the Lightning Rod (working title)" and "Glitter (working title)"—will be included with purchase. See below for a complete tour schedule and to preview the song.
Before heading out in the fall, the band returns to Newport Folk Festival to host an intimate backstage fundraising performance on July 30. They also play a series of festivals overseas then close out the summer with LouFest in St. Louis and the Dave Matthews Band Caravan in George, Washington, over Labor Day weekend.
Since its release earlier this year, Smart Flesh has received critical praise, with Rolling Stone saying “it’s as if the Band stripped their prairie-gothic majesty down to Tom Waits’ early barfly essentials.” The Los Angeles Times called it “a gorgeous, inventively arranged set of reverb-rich roots ballads.” The band made its second appearance on The Late Show with David Letterman recently, and will be featured on NPR’s World Cafétoday.
Smart Flesh is the self-produced follow up to The Low Anthem’s critically lauded Nonesuch debut, Oh My God, Charlie Darwin. The majority of Smart Flesh’s 11 tracks were recorded in a cavernous, vacant pasta sauce factory in Central Falls, Rhode Island. Additional tracking was done in a Providence garage, dubbed the “gator pit.” Mike Mogis (Bright Eyes, Monsters of Folk) mixed the record in Omaha with additional mixing by engineer Jesse Lauter (Elvis Perkins) in New York. The Low Anthem is now three multi-instrumentalists: Jocie Adams, Ben Knox Miller, and Jeff Prystowsky.
To pick up Smart Flesh and Oh My God, Charlie Darwin, head to the Nonesuch Store, where orders include high-quality, 320 kbps MP3s of the album at checkout.
