The Low Anthem launches its fall headlining tour of North America with a concert at Philadelphia's World Cafe Live tonight. After over 400 shows since the initial release of their album Oh My God, Charlie Darwin, the band is going to take a break from the road to create some new sounds following the tour, so this is the last run of shows in support of their latest album, Smart Flesh, released on Nonesuch earlier this year. In addition to these contest dates, the band will also rejoin Iron & Wine on October 13 to open their show at Terminal 5 in New York City and will head to Montreal to play with The Barr Brothers on October 18. The Low Anthem will also play a free set at the Hardly Strictly Bluegrass festival in San Francisco's Golden Gate Park the first weekend of October. Since its release earlier this year, Smart Flesh has received critical praise, with Rolling Stone saying “it’s as if the Band stripped their prairie-gothic majesty down to Tom Waits’ early barfly essentials.” The Los Angeles Times called it “a gorgeous, inventively arranged set of reverb-rich roots ballads.” The majority of Smart Flesh’s 11 tracks were recorded in a cavernous, vacant pasta sauce factory in Central Falls, Rhode Island. Additional tracking was done in a Providence garage, dubbed the “gator pit.” Mike Mogis (Bright Eyes, Monsters of Folk) mixed the record in Omaha with additional mixing by engineer Jesse Lauter (Elvis Perkins) in New York.
