Shy and Mighty, the debut album from pianist-composer Timothy Andres, was released on Nonesuch this past Tuesday. The album's release was preceded by a stellar live concert performance of the entire repertoire by the composer and fellow pianist David Kaplan, who is also featured on the album, at New York's (Le) Poisson Rouge Monday night. Andres performs again in New York City today in two concerts with the Metropolis Ensemble, led by its artistic director and conductor, Andrew Cyr.

First up is a free mid-day event at Trinity Wall Street, starting at 1 PM and broadcast live online at trinitywallstreet.org, followed by a ticketed event at the Angel Orensanz Center at 8 PM. The program for both both concerts, titled Home Stretch, after the Andres piece receiving its New York premiere today, also includes the world premiere of his Paraphrase on Themes of Brian Eno. Andres wrote Home Stretch at Kaplan's request as a companion piece to Mozart's String Quartet No. 19, K. 465. In fact, Metropolis also reimagines Mozart's Piano Concert No. 26, "Coronation," for the program. Also being given its New York premiere today is Anna Clyne's Within Her Arms, a commission from Esa-Pekka Salonen as part of the Los Angeles Philharmonic's popular Green Umbrella series, in which Andres has also been featured.
