Toumani Diabaté joins forces once more with banjo master Béla Fleck for a free outdoor event at New York's Central Park SummerStage tonight. The two will perform in concert, followed by a screening of the film Throw Down Your Heart, which documents Fleck's trip through Africa in search of the source of his instrument. It begins a two week tour of the US and Canada. The New York Times says "it makes musical sense" to pair Diabaté, "renowned for his mastery of the kora ... with the virtuosic banjoist Béla Fleck."

Toumani Diabaté arrives in New York City today fresh off a performance at Field Day in London's Victoria Park this past weekend that the London Paper's reviewer called "a personal highlight" of the festival. He joins forces once more with banjo master Béla Fleck for a free outdoor event at New York's Central Park SummerStage tonight.

The two will perform in concert, beginning at 7:30 PM ET, followed by a screening of the film Throw Down Your Heart, which documents Fleck's trip through Africa in search of the source of his instrument. Following tonight's event, the musicians, who toured together earlier this year as part of Fleck's Africa Project, return to the road, playing up and down the East and West Coasts of the United States, along with a stop in Canada for the Edmonton Folk Music Festival.

The New York Times's Amanda Petrusich says "it makes musical sense" to pair Diabaté, "renowned for his mastery of the kora ... with the virtuosic banjoist Béla Fleck." The Village Voice's Mikael Wood echoes that sentiment, calling Diabaté "as recognized an expert on the kora as Fleck is on the banjo."
