Devendra Banhart recently spoke with France’s arts and culture website PUREchannel about his forthcoming album, Mala, and performed intimate, solo acoustic takes of two songs off the album, “Golden Girls” and "Never Seen Such Good Things." Devendra Banhart, whose Nonesuch debut album, Mala, is due out March 12, recently discussed the album with France’s arts and culture website PUREchannel, in a Paris bathroom. The interview is conducted predominantly in English, with a bit of French and Spanish as well. Banhart also performed intimate, solo acoustic takes of two songs off the album, “Golden Girls” and "Never Seen Such Good Things” (the album version of which can be heard on Banhart's YouTube channel). Mala, Devendra Banhart's eighth studio album, took shape in Los Angeles, where he and longtime cohort Noah Georgeson produced the album together, playing most of the instruments themselves, using borrowed equipment and a recorder they’d found in a pawn shop. The album is available for pre-order in the Nonesuch Store, where both CD and vinyl orders include an instant download of the song “Für Hildegard von Bingen” and a limited-edition, autographed print.
Banhart is slated to perform live at the SXSW music conference, joining KCRW's Official SXSW Day Showcase at the Austin Convention Center's Radio Day Stage on March 13. The official SXSW showcase is open to anyone with a festival badge or wristband.
