Molly Tuttle, who was born in Santa Clara, California, and raised in Palo Alto, was back home in the Bay Area in December to perform four sold-out shows with her band Golden Highway at the Guild Theatre in Menlo Park, when she spoke with Anne Makovec of Bay Area CBS station KPIX in celebration of the latest GRAMMY nomination for her and the band: Best Bluegrass Album for City of Gold. They stopped by Gryphon String Instruments in Palo Alto, joined by Molly's dad, music teacher and multi-instrumentalist Jack Tuttle, to talk about her growing up in the area and the importance of the store in her musical life. Produced by Tuttle and Jerry Douglas and recorded in Nashville, City of Gold was inspired by Tuttle’s near constant touring with Golden Highway and their growth together as musicians and performers, cohering as a band. These 13 tracks—mostly written by Tuttle and Ketch Secor (Old Crow Medicine Show)—capture the electric energy of the band’s live shows by highlighting each member’s musical strengths.
