Rokia Traoré, who is currently touring Europe, recently performed an intimate solo version of "Ka Moun Kè" off her new album, Beautiful Africa, for the Guardian. In the exclusive live session, part of the Guardian's How I wrote ... series, she discusses the origins of this love song, the title of which translates as "Darling, What Can I Do For You?" The performance is a preview of Traoré's upcoming tour stop at the Glastonbury Festival. Beautiful Africa, which was released on Nonesuch Records in Europe in April, has been met with great critical acclaim in the UK, earning perfect five-star reviews from the Guardian, which calls her "Africa's most inventive singer-songwriter," Observer, Daily Telegraph, and Financial Times. Uncut calls it "a career highpoint." The album is due for release in the US on Nonesuch this fall.

In the recently published July issue of Songlines, the magazine counts down the Top 25 Mali Albums, a "countdown of the best albums from Africa's musical powerhouse," placing Rokia Traoré's 2009 Nonesuch album Tchamantché at No. 4. Also on the list are Fatoumata Diawara's 2012 debut album Fatou, Oumou Sangare's Oumou (2004), Ali Farka Touré's Savane (2006), Toumani Diabaté's The Mandé Variations (2008), Amadou & Mariam's Dimanche à Bamako (2005), and, at No. 1, Ali Farka Touré and Toumani Diabaté's Ali and Toumani (2010).

    Kronos Quartet's Album 'Pieces of Africa' Inducted Into National Recording Registry at Library of Congress

    Congratulations to Kronos Quartet, whose acclaimed 1992 Nonesuch album Pieces of Africa has been named one of twenty-five recordings to be inducted into the National Recording Registry at the Library of Congress for 2024. "It planted a seed for our work," Kronos founder and violinist David Harrington says of the album. "It's flowered so beautifully."
